Nathalie Houtermans is an experienced curator and art & culture theorist. She is specialised in developing interdisciplinary art projects, on unusual locations – mainly in public space – as well as in art institutes.
She developed projects and curated exhibitions in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, The Hague, Sao Paulo, New York, Havana, Shanghai, Djakarta, Cape Town and Mumbai.
She has a broad knowledge about several art disciplines and their specific work processes. Although her background is visual arts, she also worked a lot with digital, video and performance artists, choreographers/dancers, architects, (graphic) designers, composers/musicians and writers. She produced new, site specific works with these artists herself.
initiator: she has been a pioneer in setting up flexible organisations, specialised in developing temporary projects in public space and other non-art locations, with a focus on presenting high quality, ‘difficult’, art works to a broad audience. She knows how to communicate art works on all levels for all target groups and is particularly interested in reaching an audience that has not been introduced to contemporary art yet. She knows what actually works and what absolutely not works regarding projects in public space, but keeps on exploring other approaches.
tutor | mentor | lecturer: she is an experienced tutor and mentor for students on an academic level, especially for art and culture and/or theory related studies, and a lecturer for a general as well as a professional audience. Currently she is Research Tutor at the Willem the Kooning Academy (Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences).
researcher: she is a researcher with an elaborate formal education and experience, which she combines with her work practise in a unique way. Over the years she not only could gather a thorough theoretical knowledge about the position(s) of art and culture in western as well as non-western societies, but also implements this knowledge in the development of new art projects and cultural organisations.
advisor | consultant: she is an independent advisor and consultant for art organisations as well as governmental institutions. At the moment she is a member of the Rotterdam Art and Culture Council.
…and musician: she is a passionate musician. She is a vocalist and songwriter of heavy dark rock band Katie Kruel, but also collaborates with other musicians, to develop projects with music varying from punk blues and noise to lo-fi experimental techno.
